ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has suspended the Anderson County clerk of court after she was indicted on tax charges.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported Sanford signed the order suspending Cathy Phillips on Wednesday until the charges are resolved.

Phillips was indicted last week on six counts of failure to collect or pay withholding tax.

She had been arrested in 2008 and accused of collecting but not paying $58,000 in state withholding taxes on employees' wages between 2002 and 2008.

The indictments say Phillips was part-owner and bookkeeper at DTP Drywall Inc. at the time.

Phillips has been free on a $30,000 bond and had continued to function as the clerk of court until Wednesday's order.

Probate Judge Martha Newton will take over Phillips' duties.
