COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina is seeking $175 million in federal education money in round two of the "Race to the Top" competition.

The state education agency submitted its 1,700-page application by Tuesday's deadline for the second phase of the competition.

South Carolina is among about two dozen states applying for the money.

South Carolina was among 16 finalists in the first round, when its application for $300 million placed sixth.

The state is limited in round two to $175 million over four years. Half of the money would go to school districts. Plans for the money include increasing education choices within public schools and evaluating which programs are working.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says $3.4 billion is available in the second phase of the competition.
