MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The South Carolina Forestry Commission , in partnership with The Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross, will mark the first anniversary of the end of the Highway 31 Fire this week with a book about the 2009 Horry Wildfire.

News Release - Anyone wishing to obtain a copy of thea 56-page, full color Highway 31 Fire Special Edition history can visit the Red Cross' booth located at Grand Park at The Market Common during the Myrtle Beach Military Appreciation Days  event on Friday, May 28th between noon and 6:00 pm.

A year in the making, this exciting booklet documents the fire's history from ignition to control. Sources quoted are the men and women who fought on the frontlines of the massive fire, which consumed 34 square miles in late April of last year. The Highway 31 Wildfire was the largest fire in South Carolina's history in terms of damage, and its second largest in geographic area. This booklet will be available for a donation to the American Red Cross of $5.00 or more.

The cooperation of Horry County emergency responders and agencies like the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross was invaluable during those tense days in 2009. The South Carolina Forestry Commission is proud to partner with local Red Cross staff and volunteers to offer this remarkable keepsake to Horry County residents who will always remember the events of April, 2009 for the rest of their lives.

While much attention was paid to mark the anniversary of the start of the fire, SCFC feels marking the end of this natural disaster is equally important.
