Business leaders talked about ways to create more and better jobs in Horry and Georgetown counties on Wednesday.
The jobs summit was held in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. A panel discussion took place on how to improve future jobs.
CCU Research Economist Don Schunk says we need to look beyond the tourism industry. "We need to get to a point where tourism is incredibly important, but is not just one of every two jobs. We need to get to the point where we are much more diversified," said Schunk.
Schunk says we'll see a lot of job growth over the next decade in healthcare. So that's one area of focus for city and county leaders.
South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor also addressed the summit to talk about how unemployment has affected the area.
