State health regulators issued a decision regarding a proposed landfill in Marlboro County.

The State Department of Health and Environmental Control has ruled that MMR will not be allowed to proceed with the permitting process for its landfill, because the proposal doesn't meet the county's zoning ordinance.

The decision is not final, but is considered to be a signficant step in the process.

The landfill has been controversial since 2007 when MRR started the permitting process.

DHEC will issue a final decision in 30 days.
