HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- It wasn't driftwood but a piece of a European satellite that washed ashore on the beach at a resort on the South Carolina coast.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reported Monday the large curved object washed up on the beach at Palmetto Dunes on Saturday.

The newspaper reported the Federal Aviation Administration identified the object as part of a satellite launched from an Ariane 5 rocket.

Ralph Wagner of Shore Beach Services says labels on the object read "Made in France."

Sheriff's deputies have been posted around the debris until it can be removed.
