WOODRUFF, S.C. (AP) -- A former South Carolina city clerk and treasurer has been sentenced to one year of house arrest for embezzling more than $45,000 from the city.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that 57-year-old Beverly Mitchem Maddox of Woodruff was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty.

Maddox has also paid more than $46,000 in restitution. Attorney Rick Vieth says his client took the money to help her only son while he was struggling with drug addiction.

Authorities said Maddox transferred the public funds to her personal bank account between 2006 and 2008. She was fired in

August after working for the city for 37 years.
