Press Release - Nearly 400 emerging artists statewide have been accepted to attend 2010 Summer Programs or the 2010-11 Residential High School at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities.
Incoming students represent 35 counties statewide. They were selected to attend a program in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts after a rigorous application, audition and review process. Nearly 1,000 students applied to the Governor's School.
"We are excited about the wealth of interest in our programs from emerging artists throughout the state," said E. Cheryl Ponder, Director of Enrollment and Outreach. "This year's applicant pool was well prepared and extremely talented, which made the selection process challenging. These accepted students are among the state's most promising young artists."
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for the state's emerging artists. The nine-month school allows students to finish their high school years living on campus and studying creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual arts.
In addition to pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.
The Governor's School offers three summer programs:
· Academy - A two-week program for rising 10th graders who desire intensive training in creative writing, drama, music or visual arts. The non-traditional curriculum incorporates studio work, self-directed studies, performance, field trips, lectures and presentations by faculty and guest artists. Apply in the 9th grade. June 20 - July 3, 2010.
· Discovery - A two-week program for rising 9th graders interested in concentrating on creative writing, drama, music or visual arts. While they work intensely in their art area, students are also exposed to the other art areas with opportunities to attend performances and guest lectures. Apply in the 8th grade. July 11-24, 2010.
· Summer Dance* - An intensive five-week program for rising 7th to 12th grade dancers. The classically-based ballet program is based on the Vaganova technique and taught by world-renowned instructors. Through complex exercise training in both classical ballet and modern dance, students are taught a conscious approach to every movement. Apply in grades 6-11. June 20 - July 24, 2010. *Due to worldwide demand, Summer Dance students are not required to satisfy legal residency in South Carolina.
