COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Gov. Mark Sanford today joined legislators and conservation advocates to sign H.4093, a bill aimed at encouraging electronics recycling and minimizing the amount of "E-waste," or discarded electronic items, in South Carolina's landfills.

Electronic devices such as television, printers, and desktop/laptop computers typically contain metals that over time can make their way into the soil and ground water.

"This bill represents a simple recognition of the fact that we are stewards of the natural heritage we've been given, and that as a consequence we have an obligation to protect that heritage," Gov. Sanford said. "This is a commonsense way to promote more recycling and reuse of electronic devices, and to discourage the disposal of environmentally harmful materials in our landfills. I'd give credit to Senator Paul Campbell and Representatives Jeff Duncan and David Hiott for their work and advocacy on that front."

This legislation outlines the process whereby manufacturers of consumer electronics will set up recovery and recycling programs for the disposal of their products.
