(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina hospital system has agreed to pay nearly $2 million to settle allegations that it overcharged the Medicare program for a medical procedure.

The State newspaper reported the U.S. Justice Department said Monday that Palmetto Health in Columbia has agreed to pay nearly $1.9 million for overcharging for spinal fracture procedure.

The government says the hospital kept patients overnight to boost profits.

Palmetto Health says it admits to no wrongdoing in reaching the settlement. The hospital system says it kept patients overnight based on doctors' recommendations.
