A single-engine plane made an emergency crash landing in Timmonsville in the middle of Highway 76 on Sunday afternoon, the authorities said.
The plane, operated by a pilot from North Carolina, was attempting a landing at Huggins Memorial Airpark when something went wrong, Cpt. Mike Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office said.
Nunn said the pilot then attempted to take off again but couldn't gain enough altitude and was forced into a crash landing.
The impact caused a fuel leak, and authorities called the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
They were called "to make sure there's no further migration or enhancement of that spill," Nunn said.
There were no injuries, and Nunn said the FAA will handle the official investigation.
