(AP) -- CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Dozens of volunteers from a coastal South Carolina software company will help the state create an oyster reef.

About 30 workers from Blackbaud on Daniel Island on Friday will help the state Department of Natural Resources build the reef along the island's waterfront. The workers create a human chain to plant the oysters.

The reef will provide more than 1.5 million oysters the first year and serve to filter as much as 2 million gallons of water a day.

The first phase of the project involved bagging oyster shells earlier this year at the Fort Johnson Marine Lab on James Island.
