(AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford vetoed plans to increase fees for the state's court system that supporters said were needed to avoid court layoffs.
Sanford's veto on Wednesday came after speaking with state Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal about the fees she had asked legislators to approve.
Sanford said he was sympathetic with Toal's need for money but that the state needed to find better ways to pay for a core obligation of the state. He said people who file papers or take depositions shouldn't face higher costs for using the state's courts.
The most recent official estimate shows the fees would generate $21.6 million for the courts.
Sanford has warned lawmakers not to include $45 million in new fees in their $5 billion state spending plan.
