A union leader in Georgetown says he believes the steel plant there will reopen soon, but a company statement doesn't reveal much about that possibility.
Steelworkers President James Sanderson says the economy is improving and he's confident ArcelorMittal will announce it's reopening the plant "in the near future."
The company suspended operations at the plant indefinitely last July, saying the recession had caused a significant drop in demand for steel. A spokesperson for the company released this statement to us Monday afternoon: "ArcelorMittal has indefinitely ceased operations at the company's Georgetown facility, which will continue unless market conditions appreciably improve or the plant is put on a more competitive footing."
Sanderson told NewsChannel 15 he doesn't know an exact date the plant will start up. He expects about 50 employees will be called back at first, ramping up to around 200.
