A Florence watchdog group is asking for a full investigation into the death of an inmate at the Myrtle Beach city jail.
Rev. Raymond Johnson of Action 7 is asking for the investigation into the death of Samuel Bass, 39, last Thursday.
The Horry County coroner's office says Bass died in his jail cell. He was being held on a public intoxication charge from earlier that day. The coroner's office says Bass died of natural causes. They're waiting on toxicology test results.
Johnson says Bass complained of severe stomach pains while incarcerated, but jail guards did not allow him to see a doctor until they noticed that he was not breathing.
Johnson says Bass had no history of medical problems before his death.
It's standard for state police to investigate whenever a death occurs at a jail. Johnson says Bass' family trusts the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, but they're asking that jail guards on duty that night be placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
