Press Release - The City of Conway recently was notified by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History that the National Park Service has approved the National Register nominations for the Downtown Historic District expansion and the Conway Residential Historic District. These areas of Conway were included in the National Register of Historic Places on March 31st for the Downtown expansion and April 15th for the Conway District.
The earlier established Conway Downtown Historic District is a collection of commercial buildings, one public building, and one structure in the downtown area of the city centered on Main Street and also including properties on Laurel Street, Third Avenue, and Fourth Avenue.
The previous historic district boundary contained thirty-three properties, twenty-six which are contributing to the historic significance of the area. The properties represented the development of Conway from 1824 to 1940,with the majority of the buildings constructed between 1900 and 1940. This boundary increase includes ten properties. The Downtown Historic District expansion essentially entails completing the block bounded by Laurel Street, Third Avenue, Main Street, and Fourth Avenue.
The Conway Historic Residential District stretches from 5th Avenue to Burroughs Street to Main Street. This is a large, residential historic district that includes approximately sixteen city blocks and ninety-nine historic properties. The District is comprised primarily of single family homes, but also contains four apartment buildings, one school, a church, and a Confederate monument. This neighborhood includes a wide range of construction dates and building styles including Queen Anne,Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Mission Revival.
Several buildings in this district are already listed on the National Register of Historic Places and include: the Beaty-Little House, the Burroughs School , the J.W. Holliday House and, the W.H. Winbourne House.
