On Wednesday, Horry County school administrators met with many of its principals to discuss its rules of conduct for the upcoming protests by members of the Westboro Baptist Church.
The church, which preaches hateful, anti-American sentiments, will make stops at Horry County schools and churches.
Dr. Cindy Elsberry, the school district's superintendent, said the district is working with law enforcement to ensure everyone's safety.
She released the following talking points that have been given to the schools that will be targeted:
Talking Points for Westboro Baptist Church Protest
- Horry County Schools does not condone the philosophy or the demonstration of Westboro Baptist Church.
- Horry County Schools has not granted permission to Westboro Baptist Church to protest on campus. Protestors are not allowed on school grounds.
- First Amendment rights afford the Westboro Baptist Church the right to protest, providing that they comply with applicable laws and ordinances.
- Horry County Schools is working with law enforcement to designate areas or grounds in the public right of way where the protesters may assemble.
- Students, parents, community members, churches or groups are not allowed to counter the protest on school grounds.
- School administrators will meet with students to discuss the upcoming protests and encourage them to resist the temptation to engage with the Westboro Baptist Church.
