The Mullins Police Department has charged Walter Joseph Smith, 40, with second degree arson and manufacturing/possessing an article designed to cause damage by fire.

The fire started at a home on Avon Circle just before 10:00 p.m. on April 24. When firefighters arrived, they found the front steps and porch area on fire.

The Mullins Fire Department determined the fire was suspicious and Chief Robert Stetson called for police to come to the scene.

SLED's Arson Unit also helped with the investigation.
