COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidates said Gov. Mark Sanford and their party missed opportunities during the past eight years.
The four candidates for governor were debating Monday on South Carolina ETV.
State Rep. Nikki Haley said it's not a matter of how the Republicans who control the Legislature and governor's office have acted. It's that some aren't acting like conservatives.
Attorney General Henry McMaster said the state's missed opportunities going back to when Democratic Gov. Jim Hodges was in office in 1999. He said the state lost momentum then and hasn't recaptured it.
U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett defended his support for a new federal tax system. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said spending was as much of a problem as taxes.
