Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela signed a proclamation Monday designating May as City of Florence Wellness Month.

Wukela says Florence was one of the first cities in the state to start an employee wellness program in 1985.

The mayor says since then employee absenteeism has decreased and their productivity increased.

"For 25 years, the city has prioritized its employees' wellness. We're celebrating that anniversary this month recommitting ourselves to that important element to the success of our city," he said.

The city has a number of support programs for employees, including fitness and health discounts.
