The City of North Myrtle Beach recently commissioned a study by the University of South Carolina's Institute for Public Service and Policy Research to gain insight into the morale and level of concern of public safety employees in the wake of allegations of mismanagement.
The USC report says the review "was to determine how the department is managed and the extent of improper conduct among department employees."
City manager John Smithson said in his introduction to the report that he is "concerned about some of the comments and perceptions that have been conveyed to City management."
The report ends with recommendations from the staff. The report says the majority of employees interviewed for the report believe the public safety department should be split into separate police and fire departments.
