A controversial church, one that has protested U.S. Soldier funerals and insists that "God hates gays" has its sights set on the Grand Strand, hoping to spread its message at schools and churches.

The Westboro Baptist Church is expected to try and spread that often hate-filled message during a roughly week long "tour" through the Grand Strand, protesting at various schools and churches.

You may have seen the group protesting across the country, yielding a lot of negative feedback, especially after picketing at the funerals for U.S. troops.

It's at the funerals that Westboro Baptist Church has claimed that God is punishing soldiers for defending a nation that harbors homosexuals.

Some of their more common slogans at these protests are "God hates America" and "America is doomed" as well as "God hates homosexuals." Hate is obviously a common theme in their message.

The group plans to be on the Grand Strand from May 16 through May 21, protesting at several churches and high schools throughout Horry County.

They claim parents hate their children and they haven't educated them properly. Parents are a bit concerned.

"Especially right before standardized testing and stuff is about to begin," said Jill Dore, the mother of a student at Carolina Forest High School.

"It will be a big distraction," she continued, "we don't need that in South Carolina. We don't need that in Carolina Forest."

One Horry County school official said the school district is aware of the group and their intentions but at the moment schools haven't taken any official action.

Meanwhile, students at least at one high school, Carolina Forest High School, say they've created a petition hoping to deter the group from protesting near their school.
