Horry County's recently passed trash flow control ordinance may be tossed in the garbage.
A year ago, county council mandated that trash collected in Horry County be taken to the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. Now, the Senate is considering legislation that would outlaw counties from making such mandates.
Horry County's ordinance enraged some private trash haulers who say cheaper dumping rates exist in surrounding counties.
But the Solid Waste Authority says its rates are higher because of fees that go toward education and recycling programs... programs the SWA says will go away if state lawmakers pass the legislation. "All those funds will go away for the county because as it goes out, the waste continues to go out of the county, those funding go away and then it just falls back on the taxpayers of Horry County to support those programs," said Mike Bessent, Horry County Solid Waste Authority.
The Senate must vote by Thursday, if senators plan to send the bill to the House during this year's legislative session.
