CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Veterinarians at the South Carolina Aquarium sea turtle hospital in Charleston say they've made great progress in helping a loggerhead turtle suffering from lockjaw.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Tuesday the turtle was comatose and malnourished when she was found in Myrtle Beach last July.

Workers at the hospital have spent seven months feeding the turtle they named Pirate a mixture of ground fish, shrimp, vitamins and algae through a stomach tube.

Veterinarian Shane Boylan says Pirate now can open her mouth far enough to take chunks of salmon and can crush crabs.

The aquarium expects to keep her another year but will release her to the ocean if she can eat live prey.
