DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Mark Sanford says strong storms that passed through northeastern South Carolina caused heavy damage in some spots, but may not have caused enough overall damage to qualify the area for federal disaster assistance.
Sanford spoke to reporters on Monday outside Darlington County's emergency center before he surveyed the storm damage in a helicopter.
Two Darlington County schools and several homes were significantly damaged by Sunday night's storms that also knocked out power to about 1,700 customers.
Three people suffered minor injuries. The Red Cross opened one shelter Sunday night, but no one came.
The National Weather Service is trying to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado as spotters reported.
