COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The head of the Environmental Protection Agency disputes claims that new federal climate rules will hamstring South Carolina's small businesses.
The State newspaper in Columbia reports Monday that EPA chief Lisa P. Jackson says it's not true that the nation's first greenhouse gas regulations on large industries would apply to South Carolina businesses like restaurants and apartment complexes.
Jackson was in Columbia to address an environmental justice conference. She was responding to criticism from leaders from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and state Attorney General Henry McMaster.
McMaster has joined eight other states in legal action that could stop the new rules he says will cost the state jobs.
