More than 15,000 students are enrolled in Florence School District One. It's the largest school district in the Pee Dee. Administrators called this year's report card "pretty good."
"Last year our report card reported that we had nine schools that had performed unsatisfactory, at risk or below average," said Randy Koon, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Florence District One. This year, the district made some impressive gains.
According to the district's absolute rating, 14 schools ranked "average," 2 "good," 1 "excellent," 2 "below average" and one "at risk." The "at risk" school is the district's charter school.
Koon says budget cuts impacted their overall report card. "We had to cancel or eliminate our after school programs for our students who are needing the additional assistance."
Budget restraints also forced the district to cut some after school and tutorial programs, as well as remediation classes.
Koon believes the schools that saw gains benefited from the district's effective schools program, which focuses on more administrators getting in the classrooms and observing teachers.
Koon says they will work to improve underperforming schools. "Our superintendent has a goal that at minimum all schools will be average of course we want all schools to be above average or excellent."
