Area schools, Piggly Wiggly stores and MY ECO kicked off the Reuse Challenge on Thursday.
The goal of the Reuse Challenge is to establish a partnership between local schools and grocers to create sustainable reuse behavior change throughout the area.
A school sells the MY ECO Shopping Bag System as a fundraiser and earns money when a consumer makes the purchase. The consumer then receives a My ECO Rewards UPC code on their set of bags. Every time it's scanned at the schools partner grocer, the school earns Reuse Rewards Points that can be redeemed to purchase anything the school might need.
Kristen Brown is a consultant for the Environmental Agency (USEPA) and the inventor of the MY ECO Shopping Bag System that consists of four shopping bags in one reusable storage tote.
The bags fit perfectly together into a shopping cart and are easy to lift from the cart to the car. Brown describes the system as a convenient way for consumers to reuse each week versus using paper or plastic bags.
The MY ECO Shopping Bag System is sold in five Piggly Wiggly Stores in the Grand Strand area.
