Wednesday, in a news release, Florence County School District Three announced the termination of a teacher at Lake City High School after an investigation by the District uncovered an inappropriate relationship between the teacher and a student.
Officials say the relationship took place outside of school and there is no indication that any inappropriate behavior occurred during school hours.
Once the teacher admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a student, the District immediately notified law enforcement. In accordance with State law, the District also will notify the State Department of Education of the matter.
The District's investigation into this matter began after concerns were brought to the school administration regarding text messages between the teacher and student.
According to the news release, the teacher's personnel file is clear of any disciplinary action while employed by Florence County School District Three. Prior to offering a contract to this individual, the District conducted a criminal records check and contacted references, which is standard practice. There was nothing in the criminal records check or any information provided by references that raised any concerns or red flags.
We've learned the Florence County Sheriff's Office is questioning the teacher, but so far no charges have been filed.
Because this situation concerns a student, the District will not respond to questions or release any other information about this matter at this time.
