Nearly a thousand kindergarten and first grade students from Horry County schools got a special experience Friday.
Playcard Environmental Education Center hosted baby animal day in Loris.
Kids rotated through 32 learning stations that featured chicks, turtles, guinea pigs, goats, pigs and even alligators.
The students learned about the different animals by touching them, rather than just seeing and reading information out of a text book or on a computer.
"In today's society, more and more people are relying on technology and less on the real world to education themselves, and this provides an avenue for them to use all of their sense to learn about the outdoors in ways they may never get the chance to do again," Playcard Science Teacher Ben Abercrombie told NewsChannel 15.
The event also featured music and nature exhibits from various sponsors.
