GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina officials are trying to determine what started a fire that killed a Gaffney man.

Multiple media outlets reported that 60-year-old Ronnie Hiram Wessinger died early Monday in a fire at his home. Firefighters found Wessinger's body in a back bedroom of the house.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says an autopsy indicated Wessinger died of smoke inhalation and burns.

The arson team of the State Law Enforcement Division is working with the sheriff's office to try to determine the cause of the fire.

Gaffney Fire Chief Nathan Ellis says the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Ellis says Wessinger was the only person in the house.
