South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster.
South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster has teamed with the attorneys general from at least 12 other states to file a lawsuit to stop the health care reform bill.
The suit was filed in federal court in Pensacola, Florida Tuesday just minutes after President Obama signed the bill.
A viewer emailed Newschannel 15 wanting us to ask Mr. McMaster a question. Given the cost of lawsuits, why is the state suing when we face a severe budget deficit and several state employees face losing their jobs?
McMaster told NewsChannel 15, "That's a good question. But fortunately, this is the kind of case that does not cost very much and because we have 14 states that have joined together now any cost would be shared. But this is not a case involving a lot of depositions and discovery and hiring experts. Those are the things that usually cost a lot of money."
McMaster says the only part of the health care reform bill the suit takes legal issue with is the requirement for everyone to buy health insurance.
He says he wouldn't be surprised if the case makes it to the supreme court.
