COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The longest-serving Republican woman in the South Carolina Legislature says she's retiring to be a full-time grandma.

Rep. Annette Young of Summerville announced on Tuesday that she will not run for a 10th term. She's tied for fifth overall as the longest-serving Republican in the House.

Young was first elected to the House in 1990. She served as the House majority leader in 1995, and has sat on the powerful budget-writing committee since 1998.

The 57-year-old said she wants to devote more time to her baby granddaughter.

Young faced a tough challenge in the June primary from Dorchester County Councilman Larry Hargett.

She is among just 17 women in the Legislature.
