WILLIAMSTON, S.C. (AP) -- A stable owner says three quarter horses are dead following a lightning strike during a thunderstorm.

Lisa Cromer told multiple media outlets that she was putting horses in the barn Friday afternoon at her Welcome Ranch when she saw and felt the lightning strike about 100 yards away.

Cromer says the force of the strike threw her away from the stable door and she saw three horses that had been standing in the pasture fall over.

Nicole Walukewicz of the Palmetto Equine Awareness and Rescue League says there is little owners can do to prevent horses from being injured by lightning strikes other than providing a shelter and not leaving harnesses on them while they are in the pasture.

Walukewicz said two of her own horses were killed by lightning in 2007.
