COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's adjutant general is warning that proposed deep cuts in the state's military department budget will force the closure of many of the state's 70 National Guard armories.
Maj. Gen. Stanhope Spears told state Senate budget writers Wednesday the cuts would put the state at risk as hurricane season approaches.
Spears says proposed cuts of more than $900,000, combined with the loss of matching federal funds, would mean a total loss of more than $2 million.
He warns the cuts to the would harm the Guard's ability to provide combat-ready units for military deployments around the world as well as hurt the state's emergency response force.
