COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The federal government says Norfolk Southern Railway Co. has agreed to pay a $4 million penalty for a 2005 chlorine and diesel fuel spill that killed nine people and polluted a creek in western South Carolina.
The Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency said Monday the company also agreed to stock Langley Pond near Graniteville with at least 3,000 fish to replace those killed by the spill.
The company also will spend about $100,000 to plant vegetation to improve water quality on the banks of Horse Creek.
A phone message left with a Norfolk Southern spokesman was not immediately returned Monday.
Hundreds of people were hurt and 5,400 people were evacuated Jan. 6, 2005, after a Norfolk Southern train crashed into parked rail cars.
