A Lee County woman died after being mauled by a relative's pit bull.

Police say 65-year-old Ethel Mae Horton was watching the dog at her home on West Stokes Road Thursday morning.

Deputies said when the 10 year old dog attacked Horton's husband, she ran outside to help him.

Officers said the dog then turned on her.

Horton died from injuries suffered in the attack.

Her husband is being treated at a Hartsville hospital for his injuries.

The dog was captured, quarantined and euthanized.

Deputies said the dog will be tested for rabies.
