COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating nearly $400,000 missing from the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.
The State newspaper reported Tuesday that $395,000 was discovered missing during a June audit.
Probation spokesman Peter O'Boyle issued a statement that the department was a victim of fraud by people outside the agency.
SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd would not confirm that.
The missing money came from an account for a former restitution center operated by the department.
The audit says the probation department failed to notice one of its accounts had been accessed by an unauthorized person through electronic transfers.
The audit says the person who accessed the account is not a state employee.
O'Boyle says the agency has proper procedures in place, but they were not followed.
