Prosecutors kick off "March Madness"

Horry County prosecutors will work overtime this week to reduce the caseload, as the second annual "Solicitor's Office March Madness" begins Monday.

Last year, prosecutors and circuit court judges were able to dispose more than 1,400 active warrants through mostly plea deals in just one week.

The process is like a cattle call, and the halls of the courthouse will be crammed with defendants and lawyers.

Many of the cases that will be called are old cases that have slipped through the cracks, said Deputy Solicitor Jimmy Richardson.

Prosecutors will offer the defendants plea deals to begin with, and if they accept, it will be settled immediately in front of a judge. If they deny a plea deal, prosecutors will schedule a trial date for the following week.

Only murder cases will be excluded from this week's process.
