(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's electric cooperatives will upgrade the energy efficiency of 1,200 homes, then monitor power usage to see which improvements provide the greatest energy savings.
The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina Inc. announced the $3.3 million yearlong study in a news release on Friday.
Most of the upgrades will be done on manufactured homes, which makes up about 24 percent of the housing served by South Carolina cooperatives. Customers can apply with their local provider for the upgrades from March 1 to April 30.
The State Energy Office is providing $2.9 million of the study's cost from $68 million in federal economic stimulus funds. The cooperatives sell power to more than 600,000 customers in South Carolina.
