Columbia, South Carolina ---- Acting United States Attorney Kevin F. McDonald stated that Kristen Marie Harmon, age 39, of Greenville, pled guilty today in federal court to aggravated identity theft and possessing false identification documents with the intent to defraud.
Senior United States District Judge Henry M. Herlong, Jr., of accepted the plea and will sentence Harmon at a later date.
Harmon was arrested in January 2009 with numerous counterfeit checks and altered identification cards. She admitted using the fake cards to cash counterfeit checks at various businesses in the Upstate.
Investigators were able to trace some of the fraudulent transactions, with losses totaling approximately $35,000.
Mr. McDonald stated the maximum penalty Harmon can receive is a fine of $250,000.00 and imprisonment for 15 years. Harmon is also subject to a mandatory two years imprisonment for the aggravated identity theft charge.
The case was investigated by agents of the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney William J. Watkins, Jr., of the Greenville office handled the case.
