Wayne Simmons, Sr., the man accused of shooting another man inside Scotland Memorial Hospital Monday, made his first court appearance Wednesday in Scotland County.
Investigators tell us he asked the judge for a court appointed attorney.
Police say Monday morning Simmons shot Demario Covington several times in a room in the emergency room area at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.
Detectives say he intended to shoot Covington's girlfriend, but the gun jammed.
Investigators say Simmons got the room where Covington was being treated for knife wound to the neck by telling staff he was Covington's brother.
Covington had been injured earlier that morning in a fight at The Ellison Nightclub in Marlboro County.
Simmons is charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon With the Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Discharging a Firearm within City Limits.
Police are investigating if the unsolved murder of Simmons' son in Bennettsville in December of 2008 was the motive behind the hospital shooting.
Simmons remains in the Scotland County jail on a $150,000 bond.
