SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina memorial is being held to mark the 146th anniversary of the sinking of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first sub ever to sink an enemy warship.

Re-enactors march on Friday from Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island to Breach Inlet at the other end of the island. A 7 p.m. service is being held at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on the inlet and followed by a memorial by the water.

The hand-cranked Hunley left the inlet and sank the Union blockade ship Housatonic. The Hunley and its eight-man crew never returned.

The sub was raised in 2000 and is at a conservation lab in North Charleston.

Although the attack occurred on Feb. 17, 1864, the Confederate Heritage Trust set Friday as the date for this year's memorial.
