Thursday, the State House gave final approval to a bill to restructure the Employment Security Commission and put it under the governor's control.
That subject was discussed on "This Week in the Senate" on ETV.
The program is hosted by Senate Pro Tem Glen McConnell and featured Senator John Scott from Richland County and Senator Chip Campsen who represents Charleston and Berkeley counties.
They talked about the findings of South Carolina's Legislative Audit Council including $171 million spent on employees over the past three years fired for just cause. "If you have the company credit card and you ring up a bunch of personal expenses. If you have are incarcerated and can't show up for work. These are examples the L.A.C. found where benefits were actually given when the employer fired them for cause," said Senator Campsen.
The Audit Council says the unemployment trust fund went from an $835 million surplus in 2000 to nearly a $800 million deficit now.
