The Grand Strand Coastal Alliance has requested $5 million in federal funding to improve storm water drainage.
Mayors from the Grand Strand recently made a trip to Washington, DC for the US Conference of Mayors. They also met with senators and congressmen to push the importance of federal funding for water projects on the Grand Strand.
Drainage and retention projects were at the top of the list. Alliance members say they've always tried to finance these drainage projects on their own, but they simply can't. "We've all spent a lot of money, millions of dollars for these outfall projects, but with the economy the way it is and our resources, we just don't have enough to continue unless the federal government helps us," said North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley.
Mayor Hatley says she was encouraged that legislators realized the importance of these projects to South Carolina's number one tourist destination.
