(AP) -- Military authorities say a Marine from central Pennsylvania has been killed in Afghanistan.

Defense department officials say 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Michael Freeman Jr. of Fayetteville, Pa., died Monday during what authorities called a "hostile incident" while conducting combat operations in Helmand province in the southern part of the country.

Authorities say Freeman was a machine gunner assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The 2008 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School deployed to Afghanistan in October and has awards including the Purple Heart Medal, Combat ActionRibbon and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
