CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Black history month in South Carolina features events statewide ranging from astronomy to basket weaving.
Black history month begins Monday and continues through the end of February.
On St. Helena Island, there's an exhibit at the Penn Center about Robert Smalls, the Gullah boat captain who later represented South Carolina in Congress.
All month, there's a traveling sweetgrass basket exhibit at the Cheraw Community Center, while a sweetgrass basket workshop will be held at the Charleston Museum on Feb. 18.
Each Saturday during the month features an astronomy program in Rock Hill on how slaves used the Big Dipper and a song to find their way north to freedom.
Those programs are at the Settlemyre Planetarium at the Museum of York County.
