COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- African Americans and the Civil War is the topic of the annual meeting of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission.
The Friday meeting at the state Archives and History Center in Columbia also features the commission's annual awards for preserving black history sites.
The meeting also explores what life was like for blacks during the Civil War era. College of Charleston history professor Bernard Powers will lead the discussion.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of South Carolina's secession from the Union, which led to the Civil War.
