COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina county is getting millions in federal funding to replace a crumbling school that has been used as an example of why education needs more federal help.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that Dillon County would receive nearly $40 million in recovery act funds.
Dillon School District 2 Superintendent Ray Rogers says officials are planning to use about $25 million to build a new J.V. Martin Junior High School.
Several presidential candidates visited the crumbling school during the 2008 race. After his election, Barack Obama talked about deplorable conditions there as reasons why the federal government should help with school construction.
Obama invited a student from the school to attend his first address to Congress.
