ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- A former school district leader is seeking the Republican nomination for South Carolina's top education job.

The Independent-Mail of Anderson reported Tuesday that former Anderson District 4 school superintendent Gary Burgess of Pendleton has announced his campaign.

Burgess stepped down in 2008 and was scheduled to become superintendent in Hampton County School District 2. That district withdrew its offer last May, after Burgess was arrested on a charge of soliciting immoral acts in a park.

Burgess was found not guilty in August.

The other Republican candidates are construction contractor Elizabeth Moffly of Awendaw, Furman University professor Brent Nelson, Dutch Fork High School teacher Kelly Payne and Newberry College president Mick Zais (ZAY'-ihs).

Education Superintendent Jim Rex is running for governor.
